Virginia letters, 1847-1877.

The collection contains five Virginia related letters. A letter from James Kelly to Thomas Meredith, 1847 March 27, remits $35 for Jim's hire for the last year and comments on his brother's health. A letter from William J. Godwin to John Pool, 1876 January 29, requests a written reply to his letter from Secretary of the Treasury Benjamin Helm Bristow. Pool forwarded Godwin's request to Bristow 1876 February 27. Letters from A.L. Hill to Charles F. Conant, Assistant Secretary of the U.S. Treasury, 1876 May 22 and July 25, and 1877 April 2, request reinstatement as Deputy Collector of Internal Revenue in Norfolk or a new position as Collector of Customs, point out his faithful discharge of duties and his loyalty to the Union during the Civil War, send personal news and comment briefly on the coming national election, noting "Humbuggery, thy name is democratic reform."
